AimAtFile Fast File Search: Indexing Service Document Search Tool

Overview

AimAtFile is an effective way to find document files by their contents. It lets you search for files of many types: Microsoft Office documents, HTML, PDF, Plain text, Media files and others on a desktop computer or in a network. The content search functionality is based on Microsoft Indexing Service included in Windows 2000/XP/2003. AimAtFile provides a document preview. You can see the contents of found documents without opening them in their editing programs.

Microsoft Indexing Service scans files in the background as a low-priority process and AimAtFile requests the index to return search results instantly. Unlike the most of third party file search utilities AimAtFile does not scan all files each time you try to find any file. Some of third party search tools use their own indexers. Windows already includes the native powerful Indexing Service so it is not necessary to install additional indexers into system. The only thing you need is a right tool to query the built-in Indexing Service. AimAtFile Fast File Search is the tool.

When searching for files Windows Explorer also uses Indexing Service but not so efficiently. Its disadvantages often give the impression that Indexing Service does not help Windows Explorer to find files. As a result users often switch Indexing Service off. We suggest you switch Indexing Service on and use our program. You will be surprised how quickly you will find the information you are looking for.

AimAtFile Fast File Search implements the rich Features set with a functional, intuitive and simple user interface. It suits all your document searching needs. The program requires Windows 2000/XP/2003. Try It Now. The trial period is 30 days. The trial version has no features limitations.

Network File Search

AimAtFile allows to search shared folders in Microsoft Windows Network. There are two ways to do that. You can set Microsoft Indexing Service to index network shared folders or you can request a remote Indexing Service using AimAtFile.

How to built a smart document searching solution based on AimAtFile and Microsoft Indexing Service is described in the article:
Using Microsoft Indexing Service to search for files in Network.

AimAtFile can be recommended as an effective, low cost and easy administration document management system for small companies and company departments.

AimAtFile Fast File Search Quick Start

The program is easy to use. The interface is very intuitive. Run the program (Start->Programs->AimAtFile->AimAtFile). Type words (that a document you are looking for contains) in the Query field. Click Search and you will get a list of relevant results.

There are three Query Modes available: The first two modes (All File Properties and File Contents Only) are intended for simplest (Web search engines like) queries. You can specify words or phrases (in quotes) and AimAtFile will search for files that contain all specified terms (implicit AND). For example: To search for documents that include words File and Search just type File Search in the Query field. In the third Query Mode (Free-Text and Advanced) you can use Boolean expressions or the powerful Indexing Service Query Language.

The Indexing Service query language allows you to create precise queries. The Indexing Service query language is well described in the Indexing Service help and it is not very difficult. For example: To find documents which were authored by Mr. Doe enter "@DocAuthor Doe".

Fields: Files, Folder, Modified, Size and Catalog are optional. You can narrow your search by defining a file mask and root folder. It is possible to define multiple file masks delimiting them by an "OR" conjunction or by a comma (e.g. *.doc, *.xls). In the Modified fields you can specify a range for a file modification date. In the Size fields you can specify a size range for files you are looking for. In the Catalog field you can specify one or more Indexing Service catalogs to request. Multiple catalogs should be comma separated. If you leave the Catalog field empty the catalog to query is System. It is the default Indexing Service catalog installed together with Windows.

The Preview panel is shown in the right-bottom corner of the main window. It lets you see the contents of a file you select in the result list.

You are able to use AimAtFile effectively even without any special skills. And you can use it more effectively if you know the Indexing Service query language and you know how to create and configure Indexing Service catalogs.
