FAQ

Q: I have switched Indexing Service on. My hard drive is actively used but I do not get search results in AimAtFile. What's up?

A: If Indexing Service has been switched off for a long time it may take a significant time to begin bringing you up-to-date results. During this period Indexing Service actively scans files on your hard drives but do not worry. It is a low priority process and it does not prevent your work on the computer. After this initial rescan Indexing Service will incrementally index only new and changed files with a very low computer resources consumption.

Q: I can't search for PDF files using AimAtFile. Any advice?

A: To index PDF files you should download and install Adobe PDF IFilter
http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/all/ifilter60.exe

Then, it is useful to schedule a full rescan. Run the Indexing Service Management console. Click Tools->Indexing Service Management on the AimAtFile menu.
Go to your catalog Directory settings on the left panel. Right click on the appropriate directory on the right panel and click All Tasks->Rescan (Full).

Many IFilters for particular file types are available on the Web. If Indexing Service does not index files produced by your favorite program try to search the Web for the corresponding IFilter.

Q: A program produces files with *.xyz extensions. I know that it is a plain text files. Why I cannot search for them?

A: If IFilter for this file type is unavailable do the following: Click Tools->Indexing Service Management on the AimAtFile menu to open the Indexing Service Management console. Right-click on the your catalog on the left panel and choose Properties. Go to the Generation tab and switch Index Files With Unknown Extensions on.

Q: Can I control computer resources consumption of Indexing Service?

A: Yes you can. Click Tools->Indexing Service Management on the AimAtFile menu to open the Indexing Service Management console. Right-Click on the Indexing Service item on the left panel and choose All Tasks->Tune Performance on the appeared menu.

Q: Does this product enable indexing and searching of Outlook email?

A: AimAtFile uses Microsoft Indexing Service to provide search functionality. The current version of the Indexing Service indexes the file system only. So AimAtFile does not search the Outlook mailboxes. However it can search for emails that are stored as MSG files.

Q: I'm trying to search for documents containing some forms of a word. I specified "word*" in the query field and got no results. What's wrong?

A: AimAtFile lets set several Query types that specify how the text entered in the Query field is treated. The Free Text And Advanced query type is set by default and it does not allow to search for files using word forms. If you do not use the Indexing Service query language just select another query type: All File Properties or File Contents Only that suits you better. To do that Click the Option button on the AimAtFile window.
